Perhaps equality is not the answer. Perhaps we all need to just be - unequal, individual, uncontested... No comparison. Equality means comparison at every turn, a measuring stick that tirelessly seeks out the amount to which we should be measured, with endless goals that aren't possible or sometimes even relevant. Equality strips us of our individuality, it dismisses our ability to overcome adversary, it sterilises and suffocates the evolution of our heart, spirit, mind, and the authentic, incomparable journey within us all. It takes you, and places you within a mass, turns you into a number and you no longer exists as you but as an everybody.
Our needs are so different and forever changing depending on the process we are in; the flight we are on. Each flight is so very different and therefore the needs are always going to be intricate and tailor-made to the individual. Equality forgets this and sweeps us under a common banner that can never meet our needs nor fulfil us. Think Truman show!
I believe we are all to live uncontested. Loved, valued and appreciated for exactly who we are and our own individual story. A life uncontested means that we will never all be equal, but everyone has the ability to live a rich, authentic life being uncontested. A life that has pain and unfairness, but also the capacity for great restoration, character building and incredible vulnerabilities that lead to indescribable beauty (things that people don't so easily value over nice clothes, nice cars, nice houses etc.). An uncontested life means we shift our focus from what we see, to what we can not see. We value the things of our heart and everyone's story matters, and every difference is celebrated and everyone's voice is heard and everything that is wrong in this world helps to define what is beautiful and lovely.
After all bitter can not exist without sweet, just like sweet needs bitter for its own definition and sense of existence. If we never felt pain, then love would be meaningless. If everything was perfect, and we all felt equally perfect, then joy would not exist, nor would the beautiful big emotions that inspire in us the masterpieces we create be it a business, an artwork, an expression of kindness or anger that shifts mindsets and creates change. We can never have the good without the bad.
But how do we live uncontested, because the reality is that in this world every voice is not heard, and every story is not validated.
Love is not mine, or yours, but a gift for all. Love does not exist only in us; love is far greater than 'us' and we can actually draw on it.
Love is the answer.
Love does not define by a measuring stick, but generously accepts every person, no questions asked. Love is so much bigger than us. Love is so much larger than our own ability to love. Love somehow gives us the strength to accept things that are unfair in our lives, to forgive those that hurt us, to keep moving forward against all odds, to rise up from the ashes, to see the beauty despite the pain and terror. Love soothes, brings comfort, heals, restores, is unfailing and endless.
Love is the answer.
This is far harder than equality. Because we like to control, measure, label, categorise. Love just accepts all. Love (that is greater than us) is selfless, patient, kind, gracious, generous, understanding, caring, joyful, gentle, and safe. This love is impossible for any human to achieve. But when we draw on this love it fulfils us and presents us as individual, valued and uncontested. This in return allows us to better accept others without comparison or contest.
In this love, we can all have our voices heard, have our stories matter because we are not relying on impossible circumstances or impossible requirements to fulfil us. We aren't even relying on each other. We are looking to something greater, the love that created us, that knows us intricately and created the very differences we own. In this love we also take responsibility for our own uncontested lives. We do not rely on the broken systems of this world, but we rely on the power of love, to move, function, journey through life knowing that the love fulfils us and validates us no matter our circumstances.
If we keep focusing on circumstances, and trying to make everything equal, then we will be defining ourselves by our circumstances. Our circumstances should never define us. They definitely have a role in conditioning us and this is part of our evolutionary journey. But if they define us, then we wind up empty and without purpose. This journey we are on is not a start, middle with a finish journey. It is a day-to-day experience, a moment-to-moment navigation, up and down, around and through, under, over... where the beginning and the finish don't matter so much, but our heart, our mind, our spirit and the process they go through matters greatly. But if we satisfy ourselves with the equality of circumstances, then we rob ourselves of the true beauty found in that squiggly, unfair but rich unfolding of our heart, mind and spirit.
Perhaps love is all we need... to live uncontested.
